Performance Space (PSpace) is a culture-defining contemporary arts organisation which has been dedicated to radical, experimental and interdisciplinary art for over 40 years.

The company faced the challenge on how to effectively articulate the social, cultural and economic impact of experimental arts beyond the artistic community which understands its key role in Australia’s creative future. This evidence would be needed to provide a strong case for potential investors across government, business and philanthropic sectors to ensure its long term sustainability.

Approach

Drawing on our specialist expertise in the independent arts sector, J9 facilitated a series of short, intensive workshops with PSpace's executive team. J9 interrogated many of the organisation’s assumptions and together, we developed a robust Theory of Change model, which included what needed to be measured along with the systems and tools needed for ongoing evaluation.

Impact

PSpace now has a case for investment as it can describe its role in the arts ecosystem and the difference it makes both short term and long term. Its compelling impact proposition will guide future investment narratives, reporting, and partnership development. The company can now demonstrate to potential investors how partnering with the organisation delivers social, cultural and community benefits. The framework strengthens its positioning as a national leader in experimental arts.
